Royal Town Almshouses residents hold coronation tea party

Proud residents at almshouses in Royal Sutton Coldfield celebrated the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla with a lavish traditional afternoon tea party.

Lingard House, in Walmley, is run by Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust (SCCT), which has a heritage of support to residents in the Royal town since the days of King Henry VIII.

And on Saturday residents of the 46 almshouses on the site toasted the coronation of Charles III with sandwiches, cakes and drinks.

Warden Marie Murphy said: “The residents have had a lovely day with a proper afternoon tea – they love celebrating, we celebrate everything here, from Ladies Day at Royal Ascot to St George’s Day, so the coronation was an obvious opportunity to get together.”

Residents also created a colourful collage to mark the big day, baked an impressive cake and decorated the community centre with bunting and flags.

Tina Swani, Chief Executive of SCCT, said: “Sutton Coldfield is famous for its Royal heritage, and our Trust has roots which date all the way back to when the town was first granted Royal status ‑ so we really wanted to play our part in the Coronation celebrations.

“Our residents at Lingard House are a close-knit community, and they clearly made a fantastic effort to celebrate this historic event.”
