By George! Almshouses residents celebrate St George’s Day

Residents at Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust’s almshouses enjoyed a ‘knight’ to remember when they held a colourful party to celebrate St George’s Day.

The residents at Lingard House, in Walmley, regularly get together to mark significant calendar dates, from Burns’ Night to Halloween, and on Thursday, April 23rd the Johnston lounge was decked out in red and white for St George.

Warden Marie Murphy and almshouses manager Emma Baxter worked throughout the day to provide a suitable feast for England’s Patron Saint, with a buffet including turkey, ham and salmon.

And afterwards residents of the 46 almshouses on the site enjoyed karaoke, a quiz and dancing.

The Residents’ Committee made sure Lingard House was decked out in red and white for the big day.

Emma Baxter said: “Events like this are a big part of life at Lingard House - this is a community, and everyone enjoys getting together to celebrate.

“We have been working on this all day, getting ready for a party where everyone can feel part of something.

“People here enjoy a good party, and they really do look out for each other – it’s part of what makes it a really close-knit community.

“We have regular events like this but organise trips and days out too – we have plans for a visit to the theatre and a river boat trip.

“But this is great because it’s nice to celebrate St George’s Day!”

SCCT provides recently refurbished accommodation for older people at Lingard House. Each of the 46 properties has a double bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, storage space and is equipped with a 24-hour emergency call system connected to two resident Wardens during the day and a Monitoring Centre overnight.

The site has attractive, well-maintained gardens and a newly extended communal facility offering a lounge, conservatory, laundry room and computer suite.
